REVIEW: The Woman I Kept To Myself by Julia Alvarez

The Woman I Kept to Myself by Julia Alvarez My rating: 5 of 5 stars I love the poetry of Julia Alvarez. She is, to me, very much a prose poet, which is what people say about my own personal poetry. She is great. I hope to read more of her books soon. View all my reviews

REVIEW: Your Blues Ain't Like Mine by Bebe Moore Campbell

Your Blues Ain't Like Mine by Bebe Moore Campbell My rating: 5 of 5 stars I read this book long ago, for a class. What's great about it is that it switches you in and our of time periods throughout the book, all the while connecting the characters until the end. It's been so long, I probably need to read this one again as well. View all my reviews

REVIEW: Sisters & Lovers by Connie Briscoe

Sisters & Lovers by Connie Briscoe My rating: 3 of 5 stars I read this so long ago, back in the 90s, that I think I need to read it again. This was at the time of all of the "Teri McMillan", sistergirl hype around new Black chic-lit, so I was reading books like water. I'm sure it was excellent, but I think I will need to pick this one up and read again, definitely. View all my reviews

REVIEW: Chosen People by Karen Grigsby Bates

Chosen People by Karen Grigsby Bates My rating: 5 of 5 stars This was a great book, a mystery that gives the reader an inside look into the lives of the Black elite of Los Angeles, CA. I look forward to reading something else from this author. View all my reviews

REVIEW: Can't Get Enough by Connie Briscoe

Can't Get Enough by Connie Briscoe My rating: 4 of 5 stars This book is the sequel to P.G. County. If you are from the DC area or ever lived there, the locations will pop off of the page as you read. I was a little disappointed in the ending but I usually am with most books so it was no surprise. Overall, it was a good book. View all my reviews

REVIEW: Queen of His Heart by Adrianne Byrd

Queen of His Heart by Adrianne Byrd My rating: 4 of 5 stars I'm usually very picky about my "romance novel" books and I chose this one because of the modern subject matter, the story of a TV producer who creates a reality show and falls in love with the star of the show. I enjoyed the book, it was a quick read. The sex scenes are very descriptive and borderline on erotica writing, sometimes a little unneccary and I was quite disappointed in the end, as I usually am in most books I read. But, the book was good overall. I also think this book would make for a great Lifetime, BET, or TV One feature film. It's very modern and current. I'm thinking of exploring more Arabesque novels, particularly those with an African American theme. View all my reviews
